Government Swerves Legacy Arrears Payment As Promised.

Government has boldly dodged teachers’ legacy arrears payment as promised. The three union teachers’ industrial strike action was called off after the government took the unions to court to declare the strike illegal, but, promised to settle the arrears latest by 19th December, 2019.

The promise by the government that Teachers’ Legacy Arrears will be paid by December 19 has not actualised. This ignored promise by the government is rather disheartening, unfortunate and illogical to most affected teachers.

The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) had boldly declared a strike on December 5, 2019, after their enormous meetings with the government on the said legacy arrears incurred between 2012 and 2016 to be paid was blatantly ignored.

The government later on convinced the striking unions that their legacy arrears will be duly paid on 19th December.

But, unfortunately, as I write this article, the government has not fulfilled the loudmouth promise of settling the Legacy Arrears.

Teachers may probably embark on another strike action early next year if the government still pretends not to care.
