VIDEO: Speaker Alban Bagbin Declares NPP The Majority Group Of The 8th Parliament

The speaker of the 8th parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has declared the side of the New Patriotic Party as MAJORITY CAUCUS of the 8th parliament.

The side which would form the majority came under contention because both the NPP and NDC had 137 each of the 275 seats in parliament. Going by numerical strength, both parties were at equilibrium and therefore no side could be said to constitute the majority group of the house.

Owing to the fact that the number of seats in the 8th parliament is odd, and only two caucuses are known by the standing order of parliament, the Independent MP for Fomena had to break the tie, and he did so by writing to the Speaker of his Intention to do business with the NPP caucus of the house.

After reading his letter to the house, the speaker of parliament declared the side of the NPP as the Majority group of the house.
Therefore, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has become the Majority leader of the house and Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minority Leader of the house.

From today, the claim that there is no Minority or majority in the house becomes erroneous and not supported by facts.
