A few years ago, I escorted a friend to another friend’s Islamic marriage and I learnt a lot! During the said marriage ceremony, the speaker, one Dr. Abdul Ramzy, made some intriguing sentiments about marriage. I think it’s time to put that statement down!

He said that as a man, “you need three features to be ready for marriage”. According to him, they include maturity, a decent job and a comfy place to sleep. He added, “when one marries, it helps the person to be somewhat faithful and far away from fornication: whilst securing God’s blessings and the family’s respect”.

He reiterated that he was a bit confused as to why the society frowns upon early marriages especially on the part of the girls. He opined that, early marriages secure the girl’s emotional state and faithfulness to one man. He, however, expressed his disappointment on how certain Civil Society Groups are campaigning against early girl marriages but keep quiet when these same girls become pregnant as teenagers.
